Worker crimping a Hybrid Coupler on a column reinforcement cage with the G7K tool

Hybrid Coupler · Patented technology

Splice rebar without threading: align, slide and crimp.

Type 2 mechanical splice per ACI 318 (tested under ACI 318S-14, 25.5.7.1) and the Mexico City code NTC-CDMX (6.6.1.6). Cold-crimped with the G7K tool. Made in Mexico.

The bar breaks before the coupler. In the BUAP test (IGA-23-003), all three specimens broke in the bar, with the coupler intact and no slippage.

In several tests, loading was stopped at the capacity of the machine with no specimen failure.

Laboratories: González & Beas (EMA MM-0635-087/15) and Geotecnia Control de Calidad (EMA C-0230-024/10 and MM-0735-107/16). MOLBER Solutions (formerly Fussion-e). Full reports available on request.

The problem

Every week on site costs more.

Materials and labor go up every year. Every splice that is slow or rejected on site is paid for twice.

Threaded coupler

Each bar end must be saw-cut square and threaded, the threads protected and the coupler torqued. If the threads are hit, fouled with concrete or rusted, the bar can be rejected.

Lap splice

Overlapping bars uses extra steel at every splice and congests the reinforcement, which makes concrete placement harder.

The solution

MOLBER system: hybrid coupler + G7K tool.

The bar is not cut, threaded or heated: it keeps its full cross-section and properties.

  1. 01

    Align

No bar-end preparation and no perfect cut needed.

  2. 02

    Slide

The coupler is placed over the joint between the two bars.

  3. 03

    Crimp

The G7K tool cold-crimps the coupler. The crimp mark allows visual inspection.

Patented technology

Why hybrid?

A high-strength steel sleeve with an inner polymer layer. When crimped, the polymer seals the splice and keeps water out.

  • Works with different rebar deformation patterns
  • Cold splice: no welding, no heat
  • Made in Mexico

  • Portable, 110 V power
  • Dies for each bar size: #6, #8, #10 and #12
  • Works in vertical or horizontal position
  • Visual inspection of the crimp mark

Comparison

Fewer steps, no bar preparation.

Threaded coupler 9 steps

  1. Saw-cut the bar square
  2. Machine-thread (or upset and thread) the bar end
  3. Protect the threads and screw on half of the coupler
  4. Assemble the cage and pour concrete
  5. Wait for the concrete to set
  6. Clean concrete off the threads
  7. Align precisely
  8. Screw in and tighten to torque
  9. Verify the torque

MOLBER Hybrid Coupler 6 steps

  1. Assemble and pour as usual
  2. Wait for the concrete to set
  3. Align the bar, with no preparation or perfect cut
  4. Slide on the coupler
  5. Crimp with the G7K tool
  6. Visually inspect the crimp mark
